Changes
This set of unstable stream updates has more more tooling updates than usual, including both features and refactors.
Boulder
Our package build tool, Boulder, gained the ability to verify newly rebuilt manifests against existing repo manifests. This enables us to fail builds where the rebuilt manifest does not match the existing manifest, indicating the recipe and its associated .stone package artefacts are out of date with respect to the current infrastructure or tooling.
In addition, Boulder also gained various QoL features for packagers, including automatic quoting of version strings which means no more version: 0.010 becoming version: 0.01 because YAML sucks.
Finally, Boulder now also caches upstreams fetched with boulder recipe new or boulder recipe update so packagers don’t need to download them twice.
Moss
Our moss package and system state manager gained the ability to fetch packages for mirroring, and to extract packages to a specific output dir for inspection.
Lichen
Our lichen PoC installer gained an extra install option specifically designed for people wishing to boot into the Linux Console and build up their riced Wayland Compositor Desktop Experience from scratch.
This extra install option includes the necessary graphics, sound, networking and desktop-related basics that a laptop user might expect to be present.
In return, the existing headless install option has been re-targeted to explicitly be used in server installs where there is no need for desktop-related packages such as wifi or sound/graphics drivers.
Kernel scheduler changes
The user-space Linux kernel eBPF scheduler package, scx_scheds, was updated to v1.0.20.
The default scx_scheds scheduler is now scx_lavd running in autopower mode. That means that it will respect the power preference (powersaver, balanced, performance) that you have configured.
Migration Notes
Due to upstream changes, the loader service for scx_scheds has been split out to a separate package. This means that the scx_scheds scheduler will no longer be automatically started on boot.
If you would like to continue to have the scheduler start on boot, please install the scx-tools package manually.
Additionally the schedulers written in C from the scx_scheds repo are no longer built. These were mostly proof of concept schedulers and the various Rust schedulers are superior options for almost every purpose. Also, several experimental, testing, or advanced schedulers have been moved to the scx-scheds-extra package. Please install that package if the scheduler you want is not available (and is not a C-based scheduler)
